The worms are collected in the sea, streams, rivers, lakes, ponds and springs, and in soil and wet sand on land: thousands of individuals from hundreds of localities have been investigated. Species identification has been done by a combination of light microscope examination of specimens mounted on microcope slides, and by comparing the worms’ “DNA barcodes”, i.e., a method where short parts of an unknown organism’s DNA are compared with DNA from known species in a quality assured DNA library.
