Hypogeous fungi in Norway. Herbaria material and material collected in the project period 2010-2013.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

From application: Hypogeous fungi, commonly known as truffles, form fruiting bodies below ground and are adapted to animal dispersal. They form ectomycorrhiza with woody plants and occur mainly in rich, deciduous forests on calcareous ground. About 40 species are reported from Norway but already in Sweden the known diversity is 50% higher. Many species have only been found a few times and several are thought to be endangered. With this project we want to increase the knowledge of the hypogeous fungi in Norway; number of species, ecology, and distribution. We use available knowledge to select and search potentially fruitful localities and known localities for rare species will be revisited. Hypogeous fungi emit strong odours in order to attract animals and we explore this property by engaging trained dogs in our searching. We also intend to revise the collections in Norwegian herbaria since the identification of most of the specimens have net been judged in the light of current species concepts. All new collections will be handled through methods that support later DNA-sequencing according to the official bar-coding protocols, including digitalizing and deposition in a public herbarium. Annotations and photo documentation will be accessible through the Internet portals at NHM, Artsdatabanken, and GBIF. A website will be set up for the projectincluding a special effort to supply information on truffles for the general public. Results will be reported both in scientific and popular media. In a special report the red-list status of all species will be evaluated.

Métodos de Amostragem

At the chosen sites we looked for plots with suitable soil and water conditions and suitable hosts. We searched for disturbances on the ground that could indicate that foraging had taken place and then used small garden rakes to search the soil. We also used dogs trained to search for truffles or other fungi.

Área de Estudo Several forest types across many of the counties on the Norwegian mainland. Three field seasons
