Description
Inventory of Helvella in Norway. Both material from museum collections and newly sampled material were studied. DNA-barcoding was used in combination with morphological identification in order to determine species.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 156 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The project will investigate the diversity of Helvella species in Norway (incl. Svalbard) and the Nordic countries and map the distributions of all species both by making field collections and by screening existing fungarium specimens in the main Nordic university herbaria. A selection of fungarium samples suitable for DNA extraction will be DNA barcoded by primary barcode markers (ITS nrDNA) as well as by four secondary barcode markers (hsp, rpb2, tef and LSU nrDNA) adapted to a screening of Helvella specimens in accordance to international standards. New collections from the field survey will be deposited in the fungarium of the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo (O). The project is expected to result in publicly available reference databases for ITS nrDNA, and partial sequences of hsp, rpb2, tef and LSU nrDNA, a number of scientific publications, inclusive of taxonomic keys, that describe records of new species to Norway, detail extensions of distribution, and prevalence and frequency of extant species, including the unknown ones, in Norway and the Nordic countries.
Title | A unified taxonomy and biogeography of Helvella (Pezizomycetes, Ascomycota) in the Nordic countries |

Identifier | Artsprosjektet 45-15 |
Funding | Funded by NBIC through The Norwegian Taxonomy Initiative. |
Study Area Description | Mainland Norway and Spitsbergen |
Design Description | The project aim was to explore, map and DNA- barcode the speciose ascomycete genus Helvella L. in Norway and the Nordic countries by: surveying field collections in four Helvella rich nature types in Norway with the goal of detecting and mapping species and newly described species in Norway using fungarium specimens to circumscribe the distribution of Helvella species in Norway and Fennoscandia |
The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
Making use of existing collections as well as implementing a field component that specifically targets detection and recording of the many newly described Helvella species in four major nature types in Norway.
Study Extent | Localities in the provinces Oppland, Hedmark, Hordaland, Nordland and Troms were visited, in addition to Svalbard. |
